Bromochlorohydantoin is usually a white to light yellow crystalline powder or granule, without a distinct pungent odor. Some products are made into tablets or blocks for ease of use. Slightly soluble in water, it slowly dissolves in water and releases hypobromous acid (HBrO) and hypochlorous acid (HClO).

Bromochlorohydantoin has a wide range of applications. In the field of water treatment, it can be used for sterilization and algae removal in industrial circulating water, disinfection of swimming pool water (reducing irritation and chloramines), maintenance of landscape water, and sterilization of oilfield water injection, ensuring the stable operation of the system.
